5 things to do (after the beach) between Palau and Arzachena in Sardinia

Raffinato Enotur alle Vigne Surrau

A part of the North of Sardinia waiting to be discovered, a picturesque stretch of coastline featuring history, nature and leisure. A few suggestions for half-day trips between the Capo d’Orso promontory and Gallura vineyards

Along the short stretch of coastline that goes from Palau to Arzachena, Sardinia offers plenty of things to do and see that are suited to all tastes, both in Spring and during Summer. Do you want to have a complete holiday and enjoy a unique experience between beaches, nature and discovering this magical island? Here we suggest 5 things to do in the North of Sardinia after your days spent by the sea.

A number of ideas for half-day trips between Palau and Arzachena, for you to discover interesting natural places and enjoy cultural experiences during your holidays.

The Capo d’Orso lighthouse

The Capo d’Orso lighthouse

Are you dividing your beachfront holiday between swimming at Punta Cardinalino and mornings on the beach at Cala Capra? Then you are at the foot of the Capo d’Orso promontory and a 30 minute walk accompanied by the scent of juniper bushes will take you to the famous tafonata rock shaped over thousands of years: the Capo d’Orso, or Bear Rock. A breathtaking view of the rugged coastline of Northern Sardinia will repay the effort of the climb, or following paths overlooking the sea between lentisk and strawberry trees will bring you to the lighthouse at Capo d’Orso, a large lantern which exudes the charm of a bygone age, a light that emphasizes the evening shadows of the sea and the mountains.

Fortress of Monte Altura

Still close to Palau and on the way to the picturesque village of Porto Rafael is the Fortress of Monte Altura. Built in the nineteenth century, it was designed to control and defend the Sardinian north coast and the Tyrrhenian Sea from French attacks. At the time of its construction it was considered to be the most striking fortress in Europe. We recommend a visit for its architectural and environmental value, especially since local granite was also used to build the long staircase leading up to the fortress thus ensuring that it fits perfectly into the landscape.

L’isola di La Maddalena e l’Isola di Caprera

The island of La Maddalena and the island of Caprera

Easily reachable in 20 minutes by ferry from Palau, in addition to crystal clear seas and beautiful beaches the island of La Maddalena and the sister island of Caprera boast sites of natural and cultural interest. While strolling through the colourful streets of the centre of La Maddalena between gift shops and boutiques, you could take a detour to the Island of Caprera and visit the Museo del mare e delle arti marinaresche (Museum of the sea and sea-faring arts) which boasts objects, photographs and displays that tell the history and culture of the inhabitants of the Archipelago. This is a place designed to inform but also to educate its visitors to respect the environment and the sea. On the same island you can visit the house where Giuseppe Garibaldi lived for 20 years. It is home to the Garibaldi Compendium where the hero of two worlds lived and is still buried while a few kilometers away is the National “Giuseppe Garibaldi” Memorial Museum which has multimedia systems and four exhibition spaces that tell the story of the life in Sardinia of this illustrious character who wrote a part of the history of Italy.

Archaeological sites in Arzachena

If you head further south near the small but appealing village of Cannigione, you could take a historical and cultural tour around Arzachena. The area can almost be considered an open-air archaeological museum thanks to the numerous finds dating back to the nuraghic period. The Albucciu nuraghe, which extends over three separate sections is a good example of typical prehistoric construction. The temple of Malchittu, an interesting model of religious nuraghic architecture, has been maintained in optimum condition; or there is the nearby Coddu Vecchjiu tomb of the Giants, a typical nuraghic funerary building. This is a cultural journey through Gallura where you can observe the oldest civilization in the Mediterranean at first hand.

Elegant oenological tour of the Surrau vineyards

The Gallura area produces exceptional wines and during your holiday near Arzachena you will have the chance to taste and savour the many varieties of excellent whites and reds. But why not visit the cellars and vineyards of Northern Sardinia in which these nectars come to life? An interesting tour/tasting is on offer every day at the Cantine Surrau. An oenological tour dedicated to wine-making routes and the sampling of the best wines from Gallura, in a setting with exquisite styling but perfectly inserted into the landscape.

September in Sardinia: regattas at Porto Cervo

The Northern Sardinia waters host the giants from the world of sailing with a calendar full of events throughout the whole of September.

Looking for one more reason for a holiday in the North of Sardinia in September? If the beauty and variety of landscapes combined with brilliant sunny days on heavenly beaches are not enough, we recommend you think about watching the regattas. The Hotel Capo d’Orso looks right out over the stretch of sea that is the competition venue for these races which you can enjoy either from your bedroom or the terrace bar.
In September, the Costa Smeralda and its ‘capital’ Porto Cervo are home to the most significant boats and crews in the world who compete in ferocious competitions between the coastlines of Caprera, La Maddalena, Baja Sardinia and Porto Cervo. Moreover, in just 10 minutes by boat or 20 minutes by car, you can immerse yourself in the supercharged atmosphere that reigns in Porto Cervo during these competitions, or casually and curiously admire the most elegant and majestic sailing yachts from around the world during a walk along the harbour, the unmissable backdrop to these challenges which represent a full calendar of events that every year attracts numerous enthusiasts, fans and water sports lovers.

It starts with the Perini Navi Cup from the 2nd to the 5th of September and which in its sixth year will see a fleet of impressive luxury yachts competing along a range of coastal routes in the waters of the La Maddalena Archipelago. This is followed by the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup & Rolex Maxi 72 World Championship, an unmissable event since 1980 when the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda established the first championship for the largest sailing boats of the time. The event, which takes place from September 6th to 12th is one of the most anticipated by both ship-owners and competing crews and regularly attracts over 40 maxi yachts. From September 18th to 20th the appointment is with the Sailing Champions League, which has chosen Sardinia as the location for this important event for the first time and which promises a thrilling final that will be attended by crews from all over Europe.

The Costa Smeralda and events for a visit to Porto Cervo

La Costa Smeralda e gli eventi per una visita a Porto Cervo

Porto Cervo and the Costa Smeralda, the coast of wonders, where LUXURY is a cocktail of white sandy beaches to dream of, jet set social events, shopping and joie de vivre. What to see and do in the VIP paradise.

Sea, sea, sea: jagged coastlines, bays and beaches of fine white sand facing a crystalline blue sea; this is the gift that nature has given to this corner of Sardinia: Liscia Ruja, Spiaggia del Principe, Romazzino and Capriccioli are just some of the many white sandy beaches to visit at least once in your life, washed by the limpid Sardinian waters. Between one swim and another, concentrate on spotting the many VIPs relaxing under a beach umbrella during this hot summer.

Discovering the “Smeralda style” among the secret streets and little squares of Porto Cervo.
It is well known that the development of the Costa Smeralda was entrusted to the talent and creativity of some of the most skilled and appreciated architects in the world: inspired by local architecture and the surrounding environment, they have created a masterpiece of urban design. It is a pleasure to lose yourself in the streets and alleyways of Porto Cervo, roughly 15 minutes by boat from Marina di Cala Capra (or 20 minutes by car), or visit the Piazzetta delle Chiacchiere, and let yourself be enchanted by the views, the flower-covered balconies and the unusual architectural details as you go for a walk amidst glamorous boutiques and exclusive shops.

“Harrods Village” at Porto Cervo
For the third consecutive year, Harrods opens its doors to tourists who have chosen the Costa Smeralda and the North of Sardinia for their summer holidays: the most prestigious brands and names exhibit the best of what they have to offer on the luxurious stands at the Porto Cervo Marina, among small oases of greenery that surround the Prestige Village by Harrods. From precious watches by Richard Mille and Hublot to luxurious cars from Maserati and Bugatti, clothes and sparkling expensive jewels, for an outfit that wants and needs to stand out and impress.

Porto Cervo: when a walk along the harbour becomes a tourist attraction.
Considered one of the most welcoming marinas in the Mediterranean, it attracts the most exclusive yachts in the world whose owners stop in Porto Cervo either for a luxury holiday or just for a bit of shopping among the streets of the town centre. Hard to resist a stroll along the quays to admire these beautiful boats.

Events in Costa Smeralda – from sports to haute cuisine, there’s something for everyone!
Exclusive concerts and discos on the beach are a favourite haunt of celebrities and famous people who go wild until dawn to the rhythm of the music of the summer’s coolest DJs. During the day, the most impressive sailing boats in the world compete in aggressive regattas between the islands of the La Maddalena Archipelago in a full calendar of events that continues throughout the summer. For lovers of good food, there are wine and food festivals dedicated to the discovery of typical specialities, with tastings and gala dinners featuring the island’s tastes, flavours and aromas.

The Stella Maris Church, a jewel of architecture and design
Maybe it’s the pure white colour of the walls that during the sunniest days catches the eye of those who arrive by boat in Porto Cervo, or maybe it’s the contrast between the power of the six monoliths and the sinuous lines of the facade that since the 1960s have given this little church its considerable charm, when the architect Michele Busiri Vici designed this architectural jewel. In either case, it is the perfect place to find a little peace before heading out to explore this lively corner of the North of Sardinia.
